What type of microphone do I need to use with
my DRPA?
You need an omni-directional, flat frequency, measurement microphone.
The dbx RTA-M ($149.95 MSRP)is perfect for this application and
is available from your local dbx dealer.
Why can't I use just a regular mic to pink my room?
The RTA needs to be able to pick up all frequencies from 20Hz to
20kHz. "Regular" mics have frequency plots that can be
all over the place. Bumps and dips at various frequencies would
cause the RTA to "hear" pink noise incorrectly.
Can I make a mono input to 4 or 6 full-range output configuration
on the DRPA?
Yes, you can select mono input while in the WIZARD mode. This will
split input 1 signal to input 2. You can then run the HI/LO pass
filters on the x-over out to 20Hz-20kHz on all six outputs.

EQ |
dbx®
Type III® Noise Reduction is an entirely new concept...
virtually instantaneous encode/decode within the circuitry of
the box. We started out to build the finest EQs possible, boxes
with the heritage and performance to rival our famous 30 Series
EQs. And to no one's surprise they came out awfully darn good.
(Ask to see the Audio Precision plots compared to the competition.)
But then, Roger (our chief engineer, a nice guy, as far as engineers
go) got the crazy idea of putting this new noise reduction stuff
in the box. We listened to it and were amazed. The EQs sounded
great without it but with it the performance was nothing short
of incredible. Check it out yourself and see. But
hey, Roger wasn't about to stop there. PeakPlus® Limiter.
Who knows more about limiting than the folks at dbx; nobody...
that's who. So when the guys were developing this new series
of EQs they wanted something that would be unique to these
EQs. That's when Roger got another one of his bright ideas
and said "I bet they'll work a lot better if there's
a cool limiter built in." Next thing you know, all the
guys are in the studio amazed at the new limiter Roger had
designed specially for the 20 Series. Once again, hearing
is believing... With a threshold range of 0dbu to plus 20dbu,
the patent-pending PeakPlus limiter is designed to tame your
program material from the subtlest nuances to the rowdiest
hits. Also, the four stage LED ladder gives you a great visual
indication as to what the limiter is doing.
20
Series EQs. You used to have to settle for second best in
a reasonably priced EQ but not any more. With the new 20 Series
from dbx Professional Products you get a great EQ circuit,
a graceful yet powerful limiter and the revolutionary new
design of the Type III Noise Reduction. Check out the dbx
20 Series graphic EQs at your pro audio outfitter. You'll
see, with the 20 Series EQs you get MORE!!! |

| 166XL |
The
superb engineering in the 166XL ensures that both its compression
and gating provide versatility and excellent sonic performance
in situations where other compressor/gates typically produce
undesirable processing artifacts. When
using the 166XL’s Attack and Release controls, artists
and engineers will find that the center settings deliver classic
dbx compression, while the full control range produces voicings
that extend from slow “leveling” to aggressive
“peak” limiting.
The 166XL’s advanced gate circuitry uses a completely
new, program-dependent timing algorithm to produce ultra-smooth
release characteristics—even with complex signals, such
as voice or reverb decays. dbx engineers went on to take advantage
of the wide dynamic range and high precision of the dbx V2™
VCA to design in an extra-wide threshold range and ensure
top gating performance for each application.
Separate
precision LED displays for gain reduction, compression threshold
and gate threshold allow quick, accurate setup, while the
166XL’s intuitive operation lets users easily smooth
uneven levels, add sustain to guitars, squash drums or tighten
up mixes. In Stereo couple mode, the Channel 1 controls become
Master controls, and Channel 2 follows precisely to ensure
a rock solid stereo image—even with high amounts of
compression, through True RMS Power Summing™. Professionals
and newcomers alike will find that the 166XL sets up rapidly
and musically the first time it is used, especially with the
Auto attack and release function. Advanced applications are
now easy, with the 166XL’s full sidechain functionality,
and the ability to use either hard knee or OverEasy® compression
algorithms. Add to this already impressive list of features
the venerable PeakStop™ limiter, and you’ve got
a strong finisher, every time.
The
dbx 166XL processor is the result of an intensive engineering
and product development effort aimed at taking advantage of
the latest and best advances in manufacturing technology to
deliver true dbx audio performance and reliability to our
customers at the lowest possible cost. The 166XL puts a completely
new level of compressor/gate performance within everyone’s
reach. |

| 266XL |
The
superb engineering in the 266XL ensures that both its compression
and gating provide versatility and excellent sonic performance
in situations where other compressor/gates typically produce
undesirable processing artifacts. When
using the 266XL’s AutoDynamic™ Attack and Release
controls, artists and engineers will find that the center
settings deliver classic dbx compression, while the full control
range produces voicings that extend from slow “leveling”
to aggressive “peak” limiting.
The
Auto Dynamic™ circuitry continuously adjusts the actual
attack and release times to optimally match the program material.
Since users aren’t restricted to using the Attack and
Release controls only in “peak” operation, they
can tailor the response of the 266XL for individual tracks,
mixed program material, special effects or system protection.
As a result, production studios can use the versatile 266XL
to replace multiple “single-purpose” limiters
while sound reinforcement users can standardize on the 266XL
for all of their applications.
The
266XL’s advanced gate circuitry uses a completely new,
program-dependent timing algorithm to produce ultra-smooth
release characteristics—even with complex signals, such
as voice or reverb decays. dbx engineers went on to take advantage
of the wide dynamic range and high precision of the dbx®
VCA to design in an extra-wide threshold range and ensure

266XL sets up rapidly and musically the first time it is used,
and every time thereafter.
The dbx® 266XL processor is the result of an intensive
engineering and product development effort aimed at taking
advantage of the latest and best advances in manufacturing
technology to deliver true dbx audio performance and reliability
to our customers at the lowest possible cost. The 266XL puts
a completely new level of compressor/gate performance within
everyone’s reach.

| 1066 |
After
producing the world's most renown series of compressors, the
task of producing a new compressor worthy of our reputation
would be daunting for most engineers. Not for dbx®. Our
engineers know audio like no one else in the world. Now the
fruits of their talents are available to you in the form of
the 1066 Stereo Compressor/Limiter/Gate. Want
to instantly add that classic dbx response to your mix? It's
there at the touch of the "Auto" button. Or use
the independent Attack and Release controls to tailor the
1066 to your specific needs. Unwanted frequencies or mic bleed
in the signal path? Frequency dependent gain control is a
snap to set up and execute with our Side Chain External button
(SC Ext). Use the Side Chain Monitor button (SC Mon) and your
favorite EQ to dial in the specific frequencies you want to
trigger the device. As has become our standard, the contour
switch allows entire mixes to be easily smoothed with soft
compression while keeping low frequencies from punching holes
in the overall mix. Selectable input and output metering allow
you to make sure that everything is matched up level-wise,
maximizing your signal-to-noise ratio.
For
overall speaker protection, our new PeakStopPlus™ does
all previous circuits one better. With a new design, the PeakStopPlus
represses those unwanted transients from blowing your drivers
while minimizing the distortion common to many other "hard"
limiters. Selectable Hard-Knee or OverEasy® characteristics
make the 1066 ideal for your gain control needs, whether you're
looking for "heavy" almost-special-effects compression
or soft, smooth gain leveling. New lightpipe technology replaces
standard LED's found on most other units, making the 1066
both very easy to read and much easier to operate.
In
the studio, broadcast facility or on the road with a P.A.
system, the 1066 is designed for perfectly simple operation.
The 1066 allows you to eliminate unwanted signals, flexibly
control overall signal gain and guard your overall mix in
dual mono or stereo operation.
At
the heart of the 1066 is our new dbx V2 VCA. Developed especially
for the 1066, 1046 and other 10 series products to come, this
revolutionary VCA boasts superb dynamic range characteristics
while maintaining very low distortion and almost immeasurable
noise characteristics. The bottom line is this: a new VCA
working in conjunction with world class design makes the dbx
1066 perform better than compressors selling for hundreds
more.
State-of-the-technology
VCA's, meticulous component selection, and scrupulous testing
procedures are just a few more reasons that the new dbx 1066
is the latest in a long line of pedigreed dbx signal processors.

| 1046 |
In
today's recording and sound reinforcement environments, the
need for multiple channels of high quality, easy to use compression
is growing rapidly. The new dbx® 1046 is designed to provide
the audio professional with just that: 4 channels of great sounding
dbx compression for a variety of applications. Incorporating
the industry standard dbx designs and the latest available manufacturing
techniques, the dbx 1046 provides pristine sonic quality with
that classic dbx sound. The
1046 provides 4 channels of smooth classic dbx OverEasy®
or Hard Knee compression that are perfectly suited for use
on individual tracks of your multitrack recorder, and in virtually
all applications the separate channels can be individually
interfaced and used for entirely independent purposes. Additionally
the newly developed PeakStopPlus™ is ideal for protecting
your system from the oppressive peaks that can take out valuable
drivers in your sound reinforcement rig or studio monitors.
All
four channels have the following controls:
Threshold
- allows you to set the level at which the compressor starts
affecting the gain
OverEasy
- allows you to select between soft compression for overall
gain control or Hard Knee compression based on the characteristics
of the
original dbx 160.
Ratio
- allows you to set the slope of gain reduction affecting
the signal over the threshold level.
Input/Output
Meter - allows you to set the meter to check the input and
output levels for maximum signal-to-noise ratio and best level
matching.
Output
Gain - allows you to add make-up gain or to adjust the output
level for that channel to match the next device's input gain.
Bypass
- hard wire bypass allows you to hear how the compressor is
affecting your signal.
PeakStopPlus
- allows you to set the maximum signal level you want to pass
through this channel. While it's virtually impossible to eliminate
distortion, the PeakStopPlus circuit does it gracefully and
effectively with minimal distortion.
Stereo
Link - allows you to link channels 1&2 and 3&4 for
two channels of true stereo compression.
All
four channels feature balanced gold plated XLR and 1/4"
inputs and outputs, and switchable +4dBu or -10dBV operating
level to interface each individual channel with any other
device.
So
whether you need to control the level, placement in the mix,
or overall characteristics of 4 independent signals or control
the gain leveling on a couple of stereo pairs, the dbx 1046
is for you.

the AFS 224 provides all the processing and control necessary
for both installation and live use. The AFS 224 is an absolute
must for any live sound application. Ten
and twelve filter feedback elimination processors have become
the de facto standard, but the engineering staff at dbx have
never been quite content residing in the neighborhood of
the status quo. So, to raise the bar once again, they went
out and developed a dedicated feedback suppression processor
that offers up to 24 filters per channel with filter Qs up
to 1/80 of an octave. To achieve these staggering numbers
dbx utilized their patent-pending AFS technology that had
previously only been available in the upper echelon line of
products and made it available in this stand-alone processor,
which takes all of the guesswork out of feedback removal.
In addition to the plethora of feedback suppression filters
available, the AFS 224 also offers selectable modes, live
filter lift, and types of filtration, which are all readily
available via the intuitive user interface front panel.
