General EAW Questions
What size amplifier do I need for my EAW loudspeakers?
There is no exact answer to the question of how much amplifier power
you should use for a particular loudspeaker. Actually, there are
three separate and very distinct issues regarding selecting amplifier
power for loudspeakers.
Loudspeaker Power Handling Rating - The power handling
rating in EAW's specifications means that the loudspeaker has passed
our standard power handling test. In this test the loudspeaker is
"exercised" to a point of damage or failure. The power
rating resulting from this test is intended to be used as a point
of comparison with the power ratings of other loudspeakers. This
rating does not necessarily correspond to the best amplifier size
to use nor is it a measure of the "safe" amplifier size
to use under actual operating conditions.
Preventing Loudspeaker Damage - Preventing damage
to or failure of a loudspeaker is not a function of amplifier size
nor the loudspeaker's power rating. Preventing damage is a function
of operating an audio system so that a loudspeaker is not stressed
beyond its limits. If an audio system is operated improperly, damage
to or failure of a loudspeaker can occur even with an amplifier
sized well below the loudspeaker's power rating. Contrarily, if
an audio system is operated properly, damage to or failure of a
loudspeaker can be avoided even with an amplifier sized well in
excess of the loudspeaker's continuous (or RMS, average, etc.) power
rating.
Selecting an Appropriate Amplifier Size - The amplifier
for your loudspeaker should be sized according to both the sound
levels required and the type of audio signals that will be reproduced.
If you are unsure of how to determine these things, consult a qualified
professional or contact EAW's Application Support Group. As a rule
of thumb, where the full capability of the loudspeaker is needed
to achieve appropriate acoustic output levels, EAW recommends an
amplifier that is twice the loudspeaker's power handling specification.
This allows the amplifier to reproduce peaks 6 dB above the specified
power handling. However, this recommendation does NOT guarantee
trouble-free operation, and assumes that operation of the loudspeaker
can be properly controlled. It is the responsibility of the audio
system operator to ensure that all equipment in the system is operated
within its capabilities. That is the only way to ensure that loudspeakers
do not get stressed beyond their limits to the point of damage or
failure.

Description
The BH760 bent horn subwoofer is engineered as both a companion
to the KF760 Line Array and for other applications requiring
extremely high output at low frequencies in a relatively small
package. The two high-power, 12 in transducers load into an
expanding horn that is over 10 feet in length. Arrays of two
or more operate with increased output due to coupling effects
between the horns.
The BH760 is designed to be easily transportable
with integral handles and an optional caster pallet. Built-in
skids on its top and bottom drop into recesses on vertically
adjacent enclosures for added stability when stacked. Its
45 in depth allows efficient, two-wide truck-packing.
Applications
The BH760 provides extremely high levels of tight, punchy
bass to the lowest octave of human hearing. Its balanced horn
design allows it to be used singly or in multiples. The horns
of multiple enclosures couple acoustically to create a single,
larger horn that increases output and provides directivity
to very low frequencies.

| CP466 |
High
performance passive ceiling-mount system
Woofers couple to act like a 12-in woofer
1.4-in exit HF on large format 60° (conical) horn
Description
The
CP466 is a low cost, high-performance ceiling loudspeaker.
Its unique design utilizes four 6-in low/mid frequency cone
drivers arrayed around a medium format 60° x 60° degree
HF horn. The HF horn is mated to a 1.4-in exit compression
driver. This configuration centers the low and high frequency
axes to provide the same type of point source performance
as a traditional coaxial design. This also allows the use
of a much larger HF horn and provides significantly improved
HF pattern control to much lower frequencies than typical
co-axial ceiling loudspeakers. The four low/mid drivers are
arrayed to extend useful pattern control to below 400 Hz.
Additionally, their smaller cone size provides far better
reproduction of critical midrange frequencies without sacrificing
output capabilities.
Applications
The
CP466 is designed for use in a variety of ceiling mounted
applications where pattern control, high-quality reproduction
and higher outputs are required. These include convention
and conference centers, ballrooms, arena fill, and large meeting
rooms. The CP466 carries a six year warranty |

| DSA |
EAW’s new Digitally Steerable Array, or DSA™ Series,
represents a radical step forward for small to mid-sized permanent
installation applications. In essence, the DSA Series simplifies
the KF900/PPST technology that permits digital steering and
aiming of an array’s output and adapts it to applications
where column loudspeakers would typically be specified.
Like
a KF900 array, each driver in a DSA Series loudspeaker enjoys
its own individual amplification and digital signal processing
(DSP). Using EAW’s free DSA Pilot software program,
users can vary the vertical coverage pattern from 15°
to 120° as well as aim the coverage ±30°.
Unlike
the KF900 system, however, all this power is housed in a compact,
column speaker-type enclosure that requires no external amplification
or processing. Users only need to connect AC power, audio
signal, and network communications cables. DSA Pilot recognizes
each loudspeaker connected to the network and allows users
to control all of them from a single interface.
This
complex, powerful technology has been years in the making,
so a review of the engineering goals and design concepts will
help the reader better understand the genesis of these amazing
loudspeaker systems |

Description
The LA400 uses bass horn technology that was developed for
the KF940 SuperSub™. It loads a powerful 12 inch woofer
on an expanding bass horn that is eight feet in length, and
provides extremely high output sub bass response in a compact,
portable enclosure. The efficiency provided by EAW's advanced
horn-loading techniques permits the LA400 to extend overall
system frequency to the lowest octaves.
The
LA400 is designed to be easily transportable. The "towel
bar" handle across the mouth of the horn and cut-away
lower rear corner allows users to roll the LA400 onto its
rear-mounted casters with a minimum of effort. Mounting the
casters on the enclosure's rear lowers the system's center
of gravity during transport for easier rolling and more stable
packing. A stout grille protects the drivers from objects
that might fall into the horn when on its back.
Applications
The LA400 defies conventional wisdom, which states that an
18 inch woofer is required to drive a bass horn. 18 inch woofers
simply do not have the rigidity required to drive the high
acoustic impedance present in a horn throat. As a result,
traditional 18 inch bass bins get loud, but only produce one
note very well. The LA400 in contrast uses a proprietary heavy
duty 12 inch woofer. The woofer has the motor structure of
a traditional 18 inch device, and its cone is reinforced to
be a better engine for compact horn-loading. This woofer is
then loaded onto a properly designed bass horn which matches
path length to cone area and maximizes driver efficiency.
The result is tight, punchy sub bass response that not only
will shake your foundation, but is articulate and musical
as well.
The
horns of multiple enclosures couple acoustically to create
a single, larger horn that increases output and provides directivity
to very low frequencies. Factory-recommended digital processor
settings will enhance LF performance even more. The LA400
is engineered to work as a companion to LA Series full range
systems, as well as other high-output compact loudspeaker
systems. Laid on its side the LA400 is only 21 inches high,
which also makes it very effective in clubs and theatres where
subs must be intalled under a low stage. |

Description
EAW's LS432 line source loudspeaker system brings the classic
column speaker up to date. Sophisticated frequency shading
integrates the four 4 in woofers and three 1 in soft dome
tweeters, maximizing the benefits of line source coupling
while eliminating undesirable lobing. The system maintains
a well behaved nominal vertical dispersion of 20° to below
1000 Hz. At 630 Hz, the vertical dispersion is still 55°.
With the enclosure baffle defining a gentle arc, the drivers
form a curved line source to help prevent the vertical pattern
from collapsing in the crossover region. At the same time,
the drivers act as direct radiators in the horizontal plane,
giving the system an extra-wide 140° horizontal dispersion
with response that meets professional standards for fidelity
and intelligibility.
Applications
Like the classic column speakers of the 1950s and 60's, the
LS432 was designed to solve speech-only installation problems
in highly reverberant spaces with low ceilings and hard floors.
These might include small houses of worship, transportation
hubs, and libraries or other civic spaces. The 26 in tall,
6.25 in wide enclosure fits nicely on architectural columns
and can be custom painted to blend in with any decor. The
enclosure includes a comprehensive system of 1/4-20 threaded
mounting points for easy installation |

Description
The new MQ Series represents the next generation of permanent
installation loudspeaker systems. Using VA4 Technology developed
for the new KF700 Series, the MQ range replaces the MH and
BV ranges of Virtual Array systems. The Series comprises matched
sets of mid/high and low frequency enclosures that enjoy complementary
dimensions and trapezoid angles to facilitate the creation
of optimized-coverage arrays. The MQ1364 uses a single, horn-loaded
10 in midrange cone with a specially designed geometry that
produces a time-coherent wavefront through the upper portion
of the midrange that is critical to vocal articulation. A
phase plug with radial slots then serves to reduce the mechanical
reactance of the subsystem without affecting the directivity
of the source, allowing for flawless arraying of multiple
MQ mid/high modules. A high power 2 in exit/3 in voice coil
high frequency compression driver is mounted on a constant
directivity horn for consistent, accurate dispersal of HF
information. The MQ1364 provides a nominal coverage pattern
of 60° (h) x 40° (v).
Applications
The MQ1364 mid/high module works with the MQ1312 triple 12
in low frequency module to create arrays for use in a wide
variety of permanently installed applications. The most common
array configuration is two MQ1364’s separated by a single
MQ1312. In such an array, a certain amount of splay must be
provided to achieve optimal coverage. Rigging systems currently
available allow users up to 10° of overlap between the
mid/high enclosures. All MQ Series enclosures feature a comprehensive
system of 3/8-16 threaded mounting points for maximum flexibility
when suspending arrays overhead

Description
The MQ2315 uses three direct radiating 15 inch cones mounted
in a vented trapezoidal enclosure. Its frequency response
has been optimized for use as a dedicated low frequency system
when used with a companion MQ mid/high loudspeaker. Each driver
has its own connections on the input panel. This allows the
drivers to be connected in parallel to one amplifier channel
or connected individually to separate amplifier channels.
The enclosure features a comprehensive system of (16)3/8"
threaded suspension points.
Applications
The MQ Series comprises matched sets of mid/high and low frequency
enclosures with complementary dimensions. This facilitates
creating attractive arrays that provide high definition sound
within tightly controlled coverage areas. The MQ2315 is designed
to work with a complementary MQ2300 Series mid/high loudspeaker
to create a full range audio system. The enclosure is vertically
configured for arraying in horizontal rows. Horizontal arrays
are typically used in venues where the array must address
wide, fan-shaped audiences.
The
most common array configuration is two MQ2364e's separated
by a single MQ2315. In such an array, the MQ2364e's should
be splayed 25° to either side of the MQ2315, netting a
splay angle of 50° between mid/high modules. When arraying
two MQ2394e's separated by a single MQ2315, all enclosures
should be tight-packed to achieve optimal coverage. This configuration
will net a splay angle of 80° between mid/high modules.
All splay angles reference the center line of the enclosures. |
