Pros

  • High quality video format conversion
  • Compact size
  • Variable portability

Cons

  • Only the Atomos Connect H2S is truly portable, while the two Blackmagic mini video converters have their limitations
  • Only the Atomos Connect H2S is battery-powered, which leaves the two Blackmagic devices with more limitations
  • Blackmagic carries multiple devices for conversion beyond HDMI / SDI, while Atomos Connect converters only do HDMI / SDI

Review

All three of these mini video converters have their place. The Atomos Connect H2S is great if you're going to be doing video conversion out in the field. The continous power dual battery system gives you a redundant solution that you can put in your pocket. However, Atomos mini video converters only work in HDMI and SDI formats. Compare that to Blackmagic mini video converters. While they aren't as portable and compact as Atomos devices, Blackmagic offers various format converters, ranging from optical, analog, HDMI, SDI and more! The odd one out here is the OpenGear video converter. That's a great choice if you need a television-broadcast grade modular unit, but you'll need to acquire the chassis as well in order to utilize the video card.

So it basically boils down to environment!

  • Atomos Connect H2S Mini Video Converter - great for true portability out in the field
  • Blackmagic Mini Video Converter - great for the range of formats
  • Blackmagic OpenGear Video Converter - great for modular setups in television broadcast applications/environments
