Several techniques convey the directions of sound sources in a recording. A widely used technique for rock and popular music is multi-mono recording. Recording engineers isolate each instrument or voice and place a microphone close to it. The engineers then split the signal output of this microphone, evenly or unevenly, between two output signals, using a device called a panoramic potentiometer, or panpot.

Another advantage of recording on tape is the ability to cut the tape and join it back together. The shortest waves have the highest frequency, or number of cycles per second; the longest waves have the lowest frequency, or fewest cycles per second. From the beginning, the flat disks were easily mass-produced by a molding process, pressing a master image on a plate of shellac. Sympathetic strings are found also in many asian chordophones, particularly in india, where the gourd-bodied sitar is a favorite vehicle for classical improvisation. Unvalved brass instruments, such as the bugle, produce only the tones of the harmonic series; the valves of the trumpet and the slide of a trombone add extra tubing, giving the player a new fundamental wavelength with a new harmonic series; the instrument can thus produce more tones. Concussion idiophones are struck together, usually in pairs.
